Asbury stepping down
Alabama assistant basketball coach Tom Asbury will retire effective this July, the school announced Wednesday.
Asbury is apparently being given the Joe Kines treatment, and will work with the athletic department in some capacity.
The departure leaves a void in the Tide staff. Mark Gottfried has lost a number of quality assistants in the past few years, such as T.R. Dunn (now an assistant with the Sacramento Kings) and Orlando Early (now the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe).
With leading scorer and rebounder Richard Hendrix returning, and Ronald Steele hopefully healthy, the Tide should be in position to make this year's NIT adventure a one-year bump in the road.
Ronald Steele had surgery on both knees Tuesday. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery to repair cartilage defects in both knees. Ronald Steele is expected to fully recover after the 8-10 week rehab period.
